Well it’s offically Spring, however the last few days have been some of the best powder skiing all season long. What a way to close out the season and our first Winter Session at Storm Peak Innovations. We had the honor of running 3 great new startups thru our initial program.
LunarG, mobileXware, and Nail It were exposed to all the essential building blocks to take an idea and turn it into a financially successfull business. After 10 weeks of sessions, guest Mentors, road trips and a few days on the ski mountain, they are now ready to take the next steps to grow their business. Check out our Alumni page for some of their comments and background on the founders. It was great having them here in Steamboat Springs and we will be welcoming them back as Alumni guest mentors for our upcoming Summer Session.

On Friday, December 4th, we opened our doors to the local tech community. The feedback and support we have received from across the community has been overwhelming, and we are very excited to move forward with our first class of entrepreneurs this winter season.
We have a number of things going on at Storm Peak Innovations at the moment. In addition to finalizing our negotiations with our first class of entrepreneurs, we also initiated our cowork program.
The SPI Cowork Program is designed to support local tech types, whether they work in big companies or small. We have about 100 tech folks that are part of our monthly ‘Ignite the ‘Boat’ and it’s been a great place to network and share ideas with other local tech folks. The SPI cowork program is designed to support that community and provide a place where folks can get out of their home office and collaborate on more frequent basis. Contact us if you work with technology from Steamboat and are interested in our cowork program.

Startup activity has ramped up significantly despite the tough economic times we have been experiencing. It’s almost as if the entrepreneur is telling us “don’t worry; we will get us out of this mess”. With a host of great new ideas being enabled through technologies such as Web 2.0, Cloud Computing, Software as a Service (SaaS) we are seeing an all time high of startup activity. Technology incubators around the country are experiencing an overwhelming amount of applications for their positions. Recent data shows a 50:1 acceptance rate in one area and over 100:1 in another. So, why is the climate ripe for startups?
- Overabundant amount of great development, sales and marketing talent available as sweat equity
- Capital equipment prices have plummeted and fire sales have been common
- Leasing rates for office space have dropped significantly and many times can be traded for equity
- Although there is less investor money, it’s being spent smarter with the good ideas getting the funding
With an underserved market in place, Storm Peak Innovations is very excited about joining the technology incubator market to help more of these great technology dreams come to reality. Our experience in Open Source, Graphics software, and System Level software development can help steer these ideas to a quick entry in the market. And our experience in international channel development can help the idea turn into a revenue stream. We anxiously await our first group of entrepreneurs in January to start the development journey together!

Well the dust is finally starting to settle. We are still a few weeks away from opening the doors of Steamboat’s first technology incubator, but at last the drywall dust has settled and we don’t feel like kids playing in a chalk pail every time we step foot in our new digs.
With the walls up and painted, the windows trimmed, and all the dust cleared out, we are now ready to get down to the business of finish work: installing the acoustical ceiling, installing the full length glass for the conference room, trimming out the baseboards and electrical system, installing tile and laying carpet. We are at a very exciting point, and it is really fun to see our project coming together.
Our online presence has been keeping us very busy as well. Our brand new website is being launched as I write this, and with its blogging capabilities will be our go-to location for sharing thoughts and ideas around the intersection of cool technology development and the mountain lifestyle.
Before wrapping up here, I need to give a big thank you to the large number of folks who have been helping us bring Storm Peak Innovations to life:
Lars Anderson, our new business development director here at SPI
Dan Bonner with Treadway, Hennon and Kerr CPA
Chris Campanelli of C&C electric
David Cohen from TechStars
Jason Haislmaier and his associates at HRO Law
Mark Hoovler and the gang at Peak Mechanical
Mike Huyser of Huyser Drywall
Chad James and the whole Ignite Steamboat crew
Noreen Moore with Routt County Economic Development Office
Pete Owen from Black Dog Woodworks
Robert Straka Painting
Todd Young of TY Architecture
A big “Thank You” goes out to each of you for making this a fun and exciting journey.
